Floris Vanhoof (Installation)

With “Antenna”, Floris Vanhoof transforms a grand piano with a hexagonal antenna, translating electromagnetic waves into vibrations on the piano strings. Ever-present electromagnetic waves that fly through the air (imploding stars, far away lightning, submarines, planes, traffic, our phones etc) are intercepted by the antenna and translated into subtle vibrations that coax the piano into song. Amidst the relentless tide of perpetual wireless connectivity, this installation invites you to stand still and listen.

About the artist

Floris Vanhoof is an Antwerp-based artist that explores the borders between image, light, and sound, using old media to investigate how perception operates and which new perspectives appear. Inspired by structural film and early electronic music, he creates installations, expanded cinema performances, and music compositions. Performances of his work have taken place at, among others, ISSUE Project Room New York, Palazzo Grassi Venice, International Film Festival Rotterdam, and Electrónica en Abril Madrid, and his installations have been shown at Concertgebouw Brugge, STUK Leuven, and Kunsthal Rotterdam.
